Pine Forest Range and Nevada Desert Outing

Jun 10, 2023 – Jun 20, 2023

This is a loosely planned trip to the Pine Forest Range in Nevada.  David C will leave for the Pine Forest Range on the 10th (to reconnoiter), and will meet up with Martin in Nevada on the 16th.  Run ends on the 20th. David C and Martin are the planners and interested participants are strongly urged to contact them for the lastest specifics.

From David C:

Martin and I are planning a run out to the Pine Forest Range in Nevada. This is a small mountain range twenty miles north of the Black Rock Desert or about 80 miles NW of WInnemucca off of Highway 140.  Martin is planning a five day trip - two days in transit and three days exploring while I am considering staying in the area longer to do more exploring and some fishing for Tiger trout and possibly native Lahontans in the sparse streams of the area. (Catch and release.)

There is gas and an RV park at Denio, a border town twenty miles to the north, Bog Hot Springs, ten miles north and a couple of campgrounds at two lakes in the range (at 7,000 ft) so there are plenty of camping contingencies. The area is rife with trails and roads which can be seen on the excellent website from the Nevada OHV Commission at "The Dirt: Pine Forest Range | OFF-ROAD Nevada". (Their description is much more entertaining.) Although this may appear almost an OHV fun park the range itself is a wilderness area with one jeep road bisecting it. Additionally there is "Pine Forest Recreation | Knott Creek Reservoir Fishing | Onion Valley"

Update from David C:

Just learned that on the second June weekend, the 10th and 11th, is the Winnemucca Basque Festival. Apparently it's a long held (43rd) festival of the locals. Anyway, if you want, you can "be sure to stop into the historic Martin Hotel restaurant for a full, multi-course Basque dinner".

I'm moving my start date from the 12th to the 10th so as to get some cultural exposure. The current plan is to rendez-vous with Martin on the 16th at Bilk Reservoir which is four miles off of Highway 140 across from the Pine Forest mountains. I should have a good reconnoiter of the area by then to see if the high country is clear of snow and the road in usable. My preferred base is Onion Reservoir campground.
