From Eric:
The Cal Ida group met at the Nevada City Port of Subs on Hollow Way at 9:00 am on Saturday morning and we were on the road about 9:20. We left North on 49 where we picked up Ron and Pat and dog Hank just passed North San Juan. We turned off 49 at the Cal Ida turn in Indian Valley and went up Eureka Diggins Rd where we met a few more friends: Craig and Heather B, their dog Harlie, and Justin S.
We traveled up the Eureka Diggins Rd. (FR 25) where we aired down just shy of the turnoff to Cherokee Creek. We turned down to Cherokee Creek (FR 35) where we were in about 6-10” of snow. Snow was heavy and wet. We travelled uninterrupted until we hit the connector between FR 35 and FR25. At that point, we rose in elevation quickly and the snow got quite a bit deeper and the terrain more challenging. We traversed through a lot of off camber spots with some deep tree wells which got a few of us stuck momentarily. We all worked, successfully, to get each other back on the trail and after a couple of hours, and 750’ left to go to the intersection of FR25, we encountered an impassable off camber section. At this point, we got turned around and had a good lunch break.
My friends and I decided to do a little more adventuring as Ron, Jim, Curtis and Mike headed back. I had a great time and look forward to the next trip!
Some Stats:
Distance travelled from air down to air up 28.07 miles. Trail time of just over 9.5 hours. Ascent of 2770’ on trail
From Frosty:
The year seems like it’s gone by so fast . I have enjoyed all the different snow runs with all of their different challenges, changes of snow, ice and some spots deep. And all the trail leaders have made it a blast. If one of us gets stuck, people are right there to help you get out . With years of experience. If your new to wheeling just ask a question and someone in the club probably would have an answer for you. Whether it be driving, or things to do to your rig to improve it. I always enjoy listening to the radio when Ron D tells us stories that include Homer and Reg . Like this weekend on the Cal Ida, we learned Ron made the road we were on in 1966. The wheeling was technical also off camber; you had to pick your lines. But with that being said, there was a pretty stock Toyota four runner with 33s, I believe. He went everywhere the big tires guys went. With that being said, I hope everybody in the club and prospectives, enjoy all the camaraderie the club has to offer. Hope to see y’all on the next trip.
